Environmental Options
Today, more than ever, we seek ways to make the best use of our available resources and conserve all we can. Standing seam metal roofing offers one of the best roofing choices that can easily be integrated with other systems to provide a variety of energy efficient, cost effective options that maximize today's technology. Briefly, these options include:

PV LAMINATES

This photovoltaic system is a thin film, light weight, unbreakable self adhesive laminate which is applied to the standing seam panel either before or after roof installation. This system captures the energy from the sun and converts it to electricity through an inverter. If the photovoltaic supplies more electricity than the structure requires, solar electricity will turn the utility meter backwards reducing or eliminating the utility bill.

SOLAR THERMAL SYSTEMS

These solar hot water systems are installed beneath the standing seam roofing panels. The panels themselves become an integral part of the system heating a grid of purlins which hold and heat a non toxic mixture of water and glycol. This mixture circulates through polyethylene tubing cycled through a heat exchanger and solar storage tank system. Because the system is hidden beneath the panels, the esthetics of the building are preserved and the components are protected from the elements greatly prolonging the life of the system. When combined with the PV laminates heating, cooling and electricity can be provided together.

RAINWATER HARVESTING

Though rainwater can be harvested from most types of roofing, standing seam panels provide the most efficient roofing surface for rainwater collection. The smooth surface of the panels allows all but negligible amounts of water to be collected for use. Combined with gutters and a leaf protection system, rain water can be captured for non-potable uses including landscape irrigation, toilet flushing, laundry needs and vehicle cleaning. This technology is especially useful in drought and water restricted areas.

TAX CREDITS AND INCENTIVES

The installation of energy efficient systems and use of renewable energy products often qualifies for federal tax rebates and incentives. Additional credits and incentives may be available from your state but they vary widely. Both federal and state specifics can be seen at the website www.dsireusa.org.
